One of my passions in life is science fiction novels.
To round out my graphic design experience in more traditional outputs, I decided to design a special edition of one of my favourite SF series; Remembrance of Earth’s Past, by Cixin Liu (translated by Ken Liu and Joel Martinsen). The editions I had, and almost all editions on the market, did not represent the tone of the series well, and lacked cohesion between volumes. I designed a set of three complete books, using elements of traditional grid design, brutalist principles and modernism. I aimed to draw attention to the black profile of the books to instill a sense of presence and weightiness.

I created minimalist illustrations for each cover, depicting a key moment from each book. The monochrome print on each book represents the tonal shift of the series as it progresses by hue.
